Lagos → London: everything you need for the flight

Lagos to London is one of the most-travelled long-haul routes out of West Africa, and it is short enough — roughly 5,000 km — that people underestimate it. The flight itself is the easy part. What trips travellers up is the paperwork lead time, the terminal at the other end, and small things like the clock quietly changing in October. This guide runs as a countdown. Start at whichever checkpoint you are at now.

8 weeks out: paperwork before anything else

Your first question is not “which airline” but “which permission”. The UK decides this by passport, not by departure city, so run the gov.uk “Check if you need a UK visa” tool before you pay for anything that cannot be refunded.

There are two common outcomes:

• You need a Standard Visitor visa. The earliest you can apply is three months before you travel, and after your biometrics appointment you will usually get a decision within 3 weeks. The fee for a visit of up to six months is £135 at the time of writing. Eight weeks gives you room for an appointment slot, a slow decision, and courier return of your passport. If you can start closer to the three-month mark, do.
• You need an ETA. Visa-exempt passports now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation. It costs £20 and, according to the Home Office, covers multiple trips of up to six months over two years or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner. Every traveller, including babies, needs their own.

If you are applying for a visa, read the Home Office’s guide to supporting documents properly. Bank statements, employment letters and an honest itinerary matter more than a thick folder. A refused ETA cannot be appealed; you apply for a visa instead.

4 weeks out: book the flight that suits your arrival

Once permission is in hand (or clearly on its way), book. At the time of writing, two airlines fly Lagos–Heathrow non-stop, and they serve very different days:

Times are local and from FlightStats for BA74 and VS412 in late September 2026. Schedules shift by season, so confirm on the airline’s own site.

The overnight BA flight gets you a full first day in London if you can sleep on a plane; the Virgin daytime flight gets you to your bed at a sane hour. Air Peace also flies from Lagos to London, but to Gatwick South Terminal — a different airport about an hour south, so check this before you tell anyone to meet you at “the airport”.

The great-circle distance is 5,004 km (3,109 mi). 1 week out: money, power and phone

Money. The UK uses the pound sterling (GBP), and London is heavily card-based — contactless works on buses, the Tube and most shops. Check that your card works abroad and what your bank charges per transaction. Power. Good news: the UK uses Type G plugs at 230 V, 50 Hz, and Type G sockets are common in Lagos too. Most chargers you already own will fit. If your devices use the round-pin Type D plug, pack an adaptor.

Weather. Pack for the month, not for London’s reputation. Heathrow’s 1991–2020 averages from the Met Office show a July average high around 24°C, an October high around 16°C and a January high around 8°C with lows near 3°C. Rain is spread through the year rather than seasonal, so a light waterproof beats an umbrella you will lose. If you are used to Lagos humidity, an October evening in London will feel cold; bring a proper layer.

48 hours out: check in and check the clock

Check in online as soon as your airline allows, and weigh your bags at home — overweight fees at the counter are the most avoidable cost on this route. Allowances differ by fare type, so read your own booking rather than a forum post.

Then check the clock. Lagos runs on West Africa Time, UTC+1, all year. London is on British Summer Time (UTC+1) until the clocks go back on 25 October 2026, then on GMT (UTC+0) until spring, per gov.uk. So:

• Late March to late October: no time difference.
• Late October to late March: London is one hour behind Lagos.

Flight day at Murtala Muhammed

Both non-stops leave from the international terminals at Murtala Muhammed International Airport. Lagos traffic is the real variable: leave far earlier than you think you need to, especially for the 22:50 BA departure, which puts you on the road in evening rush hour. Keep your passport, visa or ETA confirmation, return ticket and accommodation details in your hand luggage — you may be asked for them at check-in as well as on arrival.

On board, the overnight flight is short for a long-haul. If you want to arrive functional, skip the second meal service and sleep. On the daytime flight, stay awake and you will slide straight into London’s evening.

Landing at Heathrow

Where you land depends on the airline: British Airways arrives at Terminal 5; Virgin Atlantic arrives at Terminal 3. After the border and baggage hall, you have three rail options into town, according to Heathrow:

• Heathrow Express — non-stop to Paddington in about 15 minutes. Fastest and the most expensive per mile.
• Elizabeth line — into central London in under 45 minutes and straight through to the West End and the City without changing.
• Piccadilly line — the cheapest, just under an hour to the centre, and useful if you are staying in west or north London.

All three accept contactless payment at the gates. If you land on the 05:20 BA arrival with a lot of luggage, a pre-booked car is worth considering; black cabs are available at every terminal but are priced for convenience.
